Wooldale Lydgate Presbyterian Church
The following source list was originally available only on paper in one of the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. It was designed to act as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject, but may relate only to one West Yorkshire district, or be an incomplete list of sources available.
A small group of Presbyterians gathered for worship at Lydgate after 1662.
Rev Oliver Heywood, a famous Presbyterian minister, preached at Godfrey Armitage's house at Lydgate 1671.
John Armitage's house at Lydgate licensed for Presbyterian worship 1672 and 1689 Chapel built c.1694-1695, opened 1695.
Congregation drifted towards Unitarianism in 1700s as did many Presbyterian churches.
Became Unitarian 1759.
Chapel rebuilt 1768. Sunday School built in Holmfirth Road next to the chapel 1842. Chapel renovated and vestibule and cupola added 1848. New Sunday School built next to the old Sunday School 1910-1911; it was dedicated to the memory of Rev Oliver Heywood (1630-1702).
Still in existence 2002.
