Storthes Hall Hospital
Storthes Hall Hospital, Kirkburton was built in 1904. This psychiatric hospital was in use from 1904 to 1991. It was founded as an asylum and was previously called the Storthes Hall Mental Hospital (1929-1938), the West Riding Mental Hospital (1939-1948) and Storthes Hall Hospital (1949-1991).
The Mansion Hospital, a former mill owners house called Storthes Hall Mansion, is also in Kirkburton. This too was a psychiatric hospital but operated independently to Storthes Hall Hospital. It also closed in 1991 and is now a private residence.
Part of the Storthes Hall site is now occupied by the University of Huddersfield Storthes Hall Park Student Village. Recent planning permission was granted to a retirement village on the remainder of the hospital site. The site also provides training facilities to Huddersfield Town.
Most of the hospital buildings on the Storthes Hall site have been reduced to rubble, however one building, the administration remains upright but run down and dangerous to enter.
