Stansfield View Hospital

Stansfield View Hospital, Todmorden (ref: C452)was originally the Todmorden Poor Law Union Workhouse. The hospital housed paupers, 'casuals', lunatics and infirmary cases. It was taken over in 1930 by the West Riding County Council and then had accomodation for 216 inmates, 64 patients and 25 children in a nearby home.

In 1948 after the establishment of the National Health Service it was administered by the Halifax hospital committee and had 145 beds. It later was a specialist hospital for patients with learning difficulties.

Some records are held at the Calderdale office of WYAS, for example the admission and discharge book 1880-1882. The workshouse registers start in 1879, death registers begin in 1914 and go up to 1936. Indoor relief registers begin in 1922 and end in 1930. Mental health records begin in 1948 -1958, case records exist from 1948 -1966. Access to some records may be restricted, please contact WYAS Wakefield for further information.
