Slaithwaite Providence Strict and Particular Baptist Church

The following source list was originally available only on paper in one of the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. It was designed to act as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject, but may relate only to one West Yorkshire district, or be an incomplete list of sources available.

Now called Slaithwaite Providence Baptist Church.

Was established by some members who seceded from Pole Moor in 1811 because of a dispute between the strict Calvinists and more liberal members.

A chapel was built in Hollins Row in 1816 and subsequently rebuilt in 1886. It was then enlarged c1906.

The church is still in existence in 2009.

NB. This church was often known as 'Gadsby's' because the strict Calvinist group who founded it held to the views of a Mr Gadsby of Manchester who had sometimes preached at Pole Moor while there was no resident pastor there in the period 1804-1806; it was also often referred to as being in Linthwaite rather than Slaithwaite, because it was just within the boundaries of Linthwaite township.
