Providence Street Independent Methodist Church
The following source list was originally available only on paper in one of the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. It was designed to act as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject, but may relate only to one West Yorkshire district, or be an incomplete list of sources available.
Also known as Batley Christian Brethren.
This chapel was established in 1841 by Barkerites who had left Batley Methodist New Connexion Church and used the old Wesleyan Methodist Stump Chapel in Wards Hill 1841-1843 Batley Wesleyan Methodist Church.
In 1843 a new chapel was built in Providence Street and subsequently enlarged in 1845. In 1884 the chapel was rebuilt on the same site between Providence Street and Cambridge Street.
The chapel closed in 1971 and from 1976 the building was used as RAF Association Headquarters.
NB. This chapel was nicknamed 'Trotter's Chapel' after the Rev'd William Trotter, a leading Barkerite minister.
