Nettleton's Charity, Almondbury

Established by Robert Nettleton of Almondbury in 1613 to relieve the poor, provide dowries for poor maids, help poor scholars living within the town and township, also to repair bridges and highways. A land or rent charge was to be used to raise money form properties in Mirfield, Dalton, Kirkheaton, Kirkburton, Dodworth and Lepton. Almshouses were originally erected at Broken Cross consisting of six small dwellings in a row, a poor house was situated quite near. New almshouses were erected on a space to the north side of the churchyard in 1863 for the perpetual relief of the poor of Amondbury. The charity still has some almshouses in Almondbury.
