Mount Tabor United Methodist Free Church, Birstall

The following source list was originally available only on paper in one of the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. It was designed to act as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject, but may relate only to one West Yorkshire district, or be an incomplete list of sources available.

Previously known as Mount Tabor Wesleyan Reform Church.

This church was established in 1850 by Wesleyan Reformers who seceded from Birstall Wesleyan Methodist Church. The congregation initially used a large room in Low Lane known as the 'Malt Kiln' though they continued to share a Sunday School in Chapel Lane with the Wesleyans for a short time before establishing their own Sunday School at the 'Malt Kiln' in 1851.

Later in 1851, the Sunday School moved to the Hall of Freedom in Huddersfield Road; this building was erected in 1849 by the Barkerites who had earlier seceded from the Zion Methodist New Connexion Church.

Mount Tabor chapel was built in North Terrace 1857-1858 and closed in 1967; the congregation joined St John's Methodist Church and the chapel was later demolished.

NB. The Hall of Freedom was also called the Literary and Scientific Lecture Hall; it had been used by Birstall Young Life Campaign, a Christian evangelical group from 1968.
