Lower Cumberworth Primitive Methodist Church

William Taylor, an itinerant Primitive Methodist preacher, paid many visits to Upper Cumberworth to preach between 1820 - 1821. Both Upper and Lower Cumberworth were preaching centres in Barnsley Primitive Methodist Circuit in 1821, using houses for services. A chapel was built between Cumberworth Lane and Top Road in 1851 which led to dispute of the ownership of the chapel in 1853 - 1858. The chapel was enlarged in 1877 and a Sunday School built next door to it in 1908. It was still in existence in 2000. A large room under the Sunday School was used as a village institute until the 1960's when it was renovated in 1972 - 1973 for use as a commmunity room.
