Kirkburton Wesleyan Methodist Church

Now known as Kirkburton Methodist Church.

The church was established c1780s with the first service being held in a cottage behind the George Inn.

A class existed at Highburton in 1788 and was run by Shelley Methodist Church.

In 1796 the house of Joshua Cuttell at Kirkburton was licensed for Methodist worship.

In 1816 a chapel was built at Pontey and by 1819 there was also a preaching centre at Thorncliff.

A new chapel was built at Dean Top (later called Zion Hill) off North Road in 1844-1845, opening in 1846; the old chapel was made into houses.

In 1848 a Sunday School was built next to the chapel.

By 1987 the chapel was no longer used and the congregation have used the Kirkburton Community Centre for worship since 1988.

The church is still in existence in 2009.
