Help:How to add Categories

Categories help people to find information.

Categories are listed on the Categories page. Categories can also be browsed by clicking on the All Categories link from the Homepage.

Pages should be categorised by at least one category. A page can also be categorised in more than one category.

Categorising pages means that they don’t get ‘lost’ in Off The Record.

How to Categorise

  • Select your required category from the Categories page.
  • Copy the name of the category (this is suggested because it is a page title and the format must be maintained for the page to be recognised).
  • Select the article you wish to categorise and click on the Edit tab.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  • Paste your category at the foot of the page.

Format it as follows:

  [[Category:Name of category]] e.g.: [[Category:War and Conflict]]

This will appear on the page as:

Category: War and Conflict

To ensure that your page appears in alphabetical order within your chosen category you can add the term by which you wish the page to be alphabetized:

  [[Category:War and Conflict|Cowley, George]]

This will show the following text:

Category: War and Conflict

It will be listed under ‘C’ in the War and Conflict category.

If you want to add multiple categories you need to write each one separately:

[[Category:War and Conflict]]
[[Category:Family History]]

Will show the text as:

Categories: War and Conflict|Family History
