Gomersal Methodist New Connexion Church

The following source list was originally available only on paper in one of the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. It was designed to act as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject, but may relate only to one West Yorkshire district, or be an incomplete list of sources available.

The congregation was established by 1801. They used Mr Taylor's chapel near Grove Square, this was a brick chapel built by John Taylor of Red House, c 1800. It was the private chapel of the Taylor family who were radicals and non-conformists. John Taylor was a friend of John Wesley but he seems never to have become a Wesleyan Methodist. He built the chapel for his own followers and preached there himself. His son, Joshua Taylor is said to have joined the Mehtodist New Connexion in 1797. Uncertain of how long this congregation continued in existence, it may have possibly rejoined the Wesleyans in 1820. The chapel building was a joiner's workshop by 1891 and was later used as a house. It was demolished in 2001.
